Mac Tip #300/01-August-2007
I have a confession to make: I don’t actually use Apple’s Mail.app, even though the recent series of Tips was about that application.
Even so, sometimes other software requires us to use Mail.app.
Suppose you grab a quick photo using the built-in iSight camera on your Mac. Photo Booth provides a Toolbar button to email that photo. (See Picture yourself in Photo Booth, Mac Tip #282/28-March-2007)
But when you select a photo and click the Email button it’s Apple’s Mail.app that pops open. There is nowhere to set Photo Booth to use any other email application.
It’s a similar story in Apple’s iCal: set an email alarm to remind you of an event and again, it’s Mail.app that will be used. And again, there’s nowhere to change that setting.
This means it’s a good idea to set up Mail.app to send mail, even if you don’t usually use it. Tip #296/04-July-2007 Configure Email Account Settings explains how.
Fortunately both iMovie and iPhoto allow you to choose your email application.
In iMovie go to the Share menu and select Email. Choose your email application from the Send email using: popup.
In iPhoto go to Preferences — General and select an email application from the Email photos using: popup.
Other programs, such as Address Book, use the default email application. Set the default email application in Mail.app’s Preferences — General tab.
See Newbies Guide to Apple’s Address Book for some extra information about how to send an email from the Address Book.

iPod and iCal
iPod and iCal
Mac Tip #247/14-June-2006
A friend emailed:
I can update music on my iPod, but I can’t update my calendar and can’t see quite how to do it. I have checked internet iPod help & checked back on your Mactips but still struggling. Under the iCal preferences there is a “tick to share with other computers” type box but it requires a membership to Mac — and I know you have to pay for this… Does this mean I can’t update my calendars without getting a Mac subscription? This would be a pain. Any advice you have would be appreciated!!
The answer is fairly simple, once you know where to look.
First plug your iPod into your computer. Don’t miss this step or the next steps won’t work.
Now go to go to the iTunes Preferences and click on the iPod tab. Click on the Calendars tab and tick the relevant boxes and buttons for synchronising calendars.
Different models of iPod offer differing capabilities so you should also try all the other iPod tabs and tick things as appropriate, such as contacts.
Now when you synchronise your iPod your contacts, appointments, photos and videos may all be updated, depending on the model and the settings you’ve chosen.

Backup iCal and Address Book
Backup iCal and Address Book
Mac Tip #238/12-April-2006
Do you use Apple’s iCal to keep your appointments for you? How about Apple’s Address Book for contact details?
If you don’t, then you might like to try them out — both are easy to use and the software comes free on all new Macs.
If you do use them then you might like to know how to back up your information. I haven’t tested this, but you should also be able to use this method to move your data from one computer to another.
First open iCal. Go to the File menu and choose Back up Database…. Save the file in a safe place. I have a backups folder for this. Then do the same for the Address Book, using the command Back up Address Book… in the File menu.
Notice that the iCal File menu also has an item called: Revert to Database Backup…, and the Address Book has Revert to Address Book Backup…. This item will allow you to import a backup file, if you need it, and should allow you to simply import data from one Mac to another.
