Eudora moving to Open Source

by Miraz Jordan on October 12, 2006

Today has brought us some big news about Eudora for Mac and Windows. Eudora is going Open Source, effective the first half of calendar year 2007. As an open source product, it will be free to all customers.

Future versions of Eudora will be based on the same technology platform as the open source Mozilla Thunderbird email program.

Today Qualcomm released the last commercial versions of Eudora, version 7.1 for Windows and version 6.2.4 for Mac. The commercial versions will be available until the open source version is available at the discount price of $19.95 and will include three incidents of technical support in a six-month period.

I strongly suggest you read the Press release and FAQ from Qualcomm.

This is a huge, exciting, and I think, welcome, change for Eudora.

Of the email programs I’ve looked at, Thunderbird is the only one I’d consider as a replacement for Eudora. In fact, I use Thunderbird once per month to send an HTML-formatted newsletter. It was the only one I tried which sends without horribly mangling the carefully crafted HTML.

Zoom text in Eudora

by Miraz Jordan on July 29, 2006

A friend and I were discussing the problems of reading emails in Eudora at different times of day. I need to make text larger in the early morning and late evening.

I found an easy way to zoom text in Eudora. The following instructions only look long because I’ve written out each step. I had to choose an amount to zoom the text so there are two to choose from.

Attached: two scripts compressed into a zip archive: Eudora zoom scripts.

Instructions

Get ready

  1. Quit Eudora.
  2. Open a Finder window and go to Users >[yourname] >Library >Application Support.
  3. Make a new folder called Eudora.
  4. Open that folder and make a new folder called Scripts.

Install the scripts

  1. Uncompress the file called eu-zoom-buttonszip. That should create two files called eu-zoom-buttons-4.scpt and eu-zoom-buttons-8.scpt. One zooms text by 4 points, the other by 8 points
  2. Put eu-zoom-buttons-4.scpt and eu-zoom-buttons-8.scpt in the folder you created in Step 4.

Use the scripts

  1. Start up Eudora and notice a new menu item called Scripts between the Window and Help menus. You can just use a script by choosing it from that menu, or go on to the next steps.
  2. Command click on the Eudora toolbar. A dialog appears asking you to choose a menu item. Choose Scripts >eu-zoom-buttons-4 or eu-zoom-buttons-4 . A new button appears on the Toolbar. Add the other script too, if you wish.
  3. Open a received email or make a new message. To make the text larger or smaller click on the new Toolbar button you created in Step 8 and choose the action you require.
