I’ll open that
Mac Tip #179/19-Jan-2005

A client recently emailed: “Lately all PDFs have opened in Preview instead of Adobe Reader. I’ve dutifully looked everywhere I could think of to change some setting — in Preview, Adobe, Adobe website help, system preferences etc — but haven’t hit the jackpot. Any ideas?”

Use Get Info to set the program. My answer: This is incredibly easy once you know the trick. The method also applies to all those documents which open in the wrong version of Word, or the images which open in Preview instead of Adobe Photoshop Elements, or any file which opens with the “wrong” application.

Here’s how to fix my client’s PDF problem, and the process is just the same for any other file. You’ll just need to substitute the application you need where I write Adobe Reader.

This screenshot should help you see what to do.

  1. Select any PDF and choose Get Info from the File menu.
  2. Expand the Open With section by clicking once on the disclosure triangle.
  3. Click on the popup below the words “Open with:” and choose Adobe Reader from your Applications folder.
  4. Click the Change All… button.
  5. Close the Get Info window.

From now on all your PDFs should open in Adobe Reader when you double-click them.
