4 weeks till Webstock

by Miraz on January 15, 2008

It’s now only 4 weeks till Webstock - Code for Freedom - New Zealand’s web conference. We have a fabulous programme, with excellent speakers, loads of interesting people registered to attend, and cool stuff, such as the Dinner and general merriment with the Wellington International Ukelele Orchestra (brought to us by Google).

If you haven’t registered yet, you’re already too late for most of the workshops, but we can still squeeze a few people in to a couple of them, and we still have a few places available for the conference.

Webstock 06 was mighty and we’ve worked hard to bring you an even better experience this time. For starters, we picked February, so there’s a chance the weather will be great, but we’ve also put a heap of time an effort into choosing speakers and workshops that’ll give you the best of the best.

And there will even be Chumbies

Webstock 2008 Freedom Photo Exhibition

by Miraz on December 12, 2007

Webstock 2008 takes place in mid-February next year. Join in on the Webstock 2008 Photo Exhibition: Freedom:

In the original Webstock line-up, Heather Champ and Derek Powazek were going to lead a photo workshop. They aren’t able to make it to Webstock anymore, but we’re going to have a photo exhibition and walkabout day anyway. Photos will be displayed digitally at the conference venue and archived online as a set.

The theme of the photo exhibition is FREEDOM. Interpret it how you like, but the basis of this comes from Webstock: Code For Freedom so we’d like photos that are conference theme related as well as ones that interpret this laterally.

Girl Geek Dinners come to Wellington

by Miraz on December 11, 2007

Our local Webgrrls Aotearoa group long ago gave up trying to hold actual face-to-face meetings. We could never find a time that worked for most people, and some of our members bop around the country and the world. These days we have a quiet mailing list, with spurts of activity, and a website that gets updated once in a while.

Although we’re not terribly ‘active’, it’s a friendly and familiar local group of women who are interested in the web, the Internet and technology.

Now Brenda Wallace is hoping to bring the live meetings called Girl Geek Dinners to Wellington:

A fantastic culinary and technical event is coming to Wellington. Planned for the last week of February or early March. (post christmas / webstock / linuxconf / foocamp etc). Right now we’re scoping out venues and getting prices.

…The aim of these get-togethers is to provide a welcoming atmosphere and a platform for learning in an informal environment, to make technology accessible and to be of interest to all age groups and all people, particularly women. It is an opportunity for like-minded ‘girls’ to talk about technology over food and drinks.

If it sounds like your thing head over to the web page, check out the rest of the details, and let Brenda know you’re interested.
