How to watch the colossal squid webcast

by Miraz on April 27, 2008

In February 2007 a colossal squid was found and donated to Te Papa, our national museum. The colossal squid’s about 10 metres long and weighs in at about 500Kg. That’s bigger than a ‘giant’ squid.

Today they begin thawing and dissecting the colossus — Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington, NZ - Colossal Squid:

How to view the webcast

Te Papa website links for watching the colossal squid webcast · Save the starter file to disk · Open the downloaded file · Watching the webcast in VLC.

I was using Flock, but it would be much the same with any browser.

  1. Download and install the free VLC player.
  2. Click on the stream you want to watch and save the starter file to your hard drive.
  3. In the download window click ‘Open’. The starter file opens into VLC.
  4. Double click the stream in the file list to start playing it.

Oh, and who knew — Te Papa has a blog.
