Last week while I was busy with Webstock, Maria wrote in Work: Feast or Famine:
My phone rang on Monday morning. It was one of my editors. He’s been swamped since the holidays and has just dug out of the pile of work on his desk. He pulled one of the dangling books out of the air and slapped it on the negotiation table. We talked terms, we agreed. (My co-author on the book agreed yesterday.) I’m looking for a contract in the mail any day now. Time frame? Well, the book is already listed on Amazon.com, so I guess I’d better get to work on it soon.

Since that co-author is me, I guess I should say: me too. I also need to get to work. Of course, quite a lot has changed since the first edition, so there’s plenty of research and fact-checking ahead, plus many all-new screenshots, thanks to many new features in the software.
And, by the way, did you know you can buy the first edition book as a PDF? It’s quite a well-kept secret. Unfortunately you have to use the Adobe software to read it, thanks to the Digital Rights Management (DRM) restrictions.
If you have opinions about DRM on PDFs you should let the publishers know.
Personally, I hate it. I have several fiction books I bought a few years ago that I’ve never finished reading. Every time I go to read them I have to spend an hour fighting software and re-downloading the files just to get them open. By then I’ve run out of energy, time and interest. Sigh.
The book is also available through the Safari Books Online service. So there’s another secret revealed …

Guess I’d better sign the contract already and get to work, too.
