iPod touch gets smart with Safari bookmarklets

There are lots of websites that need passwords: blog logins, banks, forums — the list is endless. On my Mac I use 1Password to manage all my various passwords — it works beautifully. It even has the ability to store a file on my iPod touch that contains my passwords; it requires a password to access the information.

But here’s the problem: the iPod touch doesn’t have Copy and Paste. I look up a password — perhaps something like p4Affq05D and then have to remember it while I find my way back to the page where I need to enter it. Fat chance!

That’s where Quasi Clipboard comes in. It requires you to type the password in to an entry box while you can see it on the password page, then displays it so you can type it in to the password box on the blog page. And it’s not just for passwords: you can use it on any pages of any kind:

Quasi Clipboard, a bookmarklet for the iPhone and iPod touch, isn’t a true copy/paste add-on, but it’s a decent halfway fix. Hit the “Set” button and type in some text (that you’re hopefully looking at in-browser), and you can recall that text into any text box later with the “Get” button. For hard-to-remember items like account numbers and URLs, it’s definitely better than jumping back and forth between pages.

BTW: the ‘recall’ in that quote refers to you doing the recalling, based on the text displayed to you.

It’s kind of clunky, but it’s a whole lot easier than going back and forth between pages, and it’s very clever in using a Safari bookmarklet to work its magic.
