Mac Tip #203/06-July-2005

Round about the year 1450 Johannes Gutenberg sparked a paradigm shift in society by inventing the printing press. This invention is credited with bringing about transformation in thought, education methods, literacy levels, communication, science and religion. It made possible novels, newspapers and noodle packets. [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Printing_press]

And while printing may have started with huge presses turning out the Bible, the Classics and academic works it now encompasses putting any collection of words on to paper with a device costing less than $50.

Each of us prints a dozen times a day without second thought.

In the 1990s the World Wide Web began creating a similar shift in society.

We no longer needed to print our words on paper and transport them at great cost of time and money around the world. Now we can send emails a dozen times a day or publish a web page in a matter of moments.

And if we publish a web page with frequently changing content we can also create a mechanism called an RSS Feed which allows readers to automatically receive the updated content, in the same way that email is delivered automatically.

The Feeds for these Tips is at: MacTips RSS feed.

Click above or paste the address into version 2 of Safari which came with Tiger (Mac OS x 10.4) and you’ll see a different way of viewing my Tips online.

Try out the slider on the right-hand side which lets you see just the headlines, or headlines plus a few words, or the whole of each Tip.

Or subscribe to the Feed in a piece of software called an Aggregator or Feed Reader and the Tips will be delivered each week with a whole lot less hassle than email. And besides, you can monitor any of thousands of websites while you’re about it.

The excellent NetNewsWire is the best Feed Reader for the Mac. You can download and use NetNewsWire for free.

And once we can deliver requested content automatically to a reader, just imagine what we could do with sound files such as radio shows! But that’s a topic for next week.

Read more about RSS feeds, Blogs and NetNewsWire. I’ve written several articles at my KnowIT blog.

Problem with RSS Feed in WordPress.
I have a subdomain that I installed wordpress for another blog site, but the subdomain site's rss feed points to my parent site.
Can anyone come up with any suggestions?

I tried to subscribe to MacTips via Feedburner, but did not get confirming email.

Then I tried RSS feed.

So far, I see no responses.

Bill: Thanks for subscribing. My first suggestion would be to check any spam-traps you have as the confirmation may have got caught up in them.
