Rename a file

A couple of ways to rename files on a Mac.

Rename a file
Mac Tip #189/30-Mar-2005

There are several ways to go about changing the name of a file. As a last resort you could open the file and choose Save As from the file menu. But there are quicker ways.

Locate the file in the Finder and click on it once to select it. Now either move the mouse slightly or press the Return key. Both methods can highlight the name and allow you to edit it.

Sometimes though my clients have trouble with those methods and this next failsafe method is useful to know.

Select the file in the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu (or press Command i). In the Get Info window click once on the disclosure triangle to the left of the words Name & Extension. This will reveal a text area containing the name of the file.

Now you can easily edit the name.
