Service: Make new sticky note
Mac Tip #169/20-Oct-2004

Back in Stickies, Mac Tip #111/23-July-2003, I wrote:

Sometimes you just want to jot down a quick note and keep it somewhere handy. This is where Stickies come in. These small notes don’t need saving, you can dot them around your screen as reminders and they come in a variety of colours.

Well, now it’s even easier to use Stickies. Imagine you’re visiting a web page, or reading an email or some other text on your screen and you want to make a quick note of something you read.

First select the text you want to keep and then visit the Services menu. You’ll find it under the Application menu (that’s next to the blue Apple, at top left of your screen). Under Services choose Make New Sticky Note. Magically a new sticky note appears containing the text you selected.

Even easier is that you don’t need to do all that mousing around: just select the text and use the Command Shift Y key command.

Can you say “Easy”? How about “Useful”?

I tried to do the thing you taught re: Stickies. I highlighted a piece of your text, went to Services, which I found under Safari, then to “make new sticky note,” and then the computer told me it was opening Classic. I stopped Classic from opening, and then I got the spinning pizza for several minutes. Why would Classic have to open to make a Sticky? I am using an eMac, OS 10.2.8, with Safari 1.0.3 as my browser.

It must for some reason be trying to open the Stickies from OS 9. I no longer have access to Classic so can’t work through this. Try finding the OS 9 version of Stickies and trash it (or rename it or stuff it) and try again. You may need to log out and in again or even restart.

You could also go to your User Library and Get Info on the StickiesDatabase. Set it to Open with the OS X version of Stickies.
