Hide and Show the Dock
Mac Tip #168/13-Oct-2004
If you’re new to Mac OS X you might like to make sure that the Dock, the strip of icons across the bottom of your screen, is clearly visible. Once you’re an old-hand though you might get annoyed with it being in the way.
One of the things you can do is to Automatically Hide and Show the Dock. If you set it to do this it tucks itself away, out of sight, until you move your cursor within range. Then it neatly pops up to let you do whatever you want.
Go to the Apple menu and choose the Dock Preferences… (or just choose Turn Hiding On, or even Command Option d). Then tick the box for Automatically Hide and Show Dock.
You’ll now find your Dock disappears. Move your mouse so the cursor is close to where the Dock would normally be and it will slide out. After you’ve moved the cursor away again the Dock will slide back in.
