Spoken word

iTunes is excellent for spoken word. Convert text to speech, or listen to audio books.

Spoken word
Mac Tip #159/28-July-2004

iTunes is great for music — I’ve mentioned playing CDs, for example, but if you look closely at the Source column on the left you’ll also see that you can listen to online radio stations.

Another thing iTunes is excellent for is spoken word.

Convert text to speech

Obtain spoken tracks in several ways. Convert text you have on your Mac into “computer voice” (which is actually pretty good). My choice is Victoria for easiest listening. See ReadItToMe and iSpeak It for more information.

I’ve regularly used these to convert stories I’ve downloaded for listening when my eyes are too tired to read.

Audible books

Another excellent way of getting spoken word is to buy Audible Books.

These books are read by actors and can be up to several hours long. I have half a dozen and have thoroughly enjoyed them. You choose your book, pay and download then start listening.

There are thousands of books in many categories and offerings include magazines and even some freebies.

Of course, if you have an iPod, you can also transfer the book to it and listen anywhere!

So go on, extend your iTunes horizons.
