The Essential Settings
Eudora Tip #229/30-June-2004
A client recently had a Eudora problem which seemed to be caused by her Eudora Settings file having been corrupted. Who knows how this happened! It doesn’t really matter anyway – the point is that her Eudora Settings were no longer of any use and had to be replaced.
This would have been easy if she had kept a backup, but as she had not we had to start over and enter all her information from scratch.
Which brings me to the payload of this message. Some Eudora settings are essential (and you should record them safely somewhere) while others are simply a matter of preference.
The settings you should be sure to record for each email address are:
- username
- password
- mail server there may be two of these:
- pop server
- smtp server
If you don’t know these pieces of information then look in your Eudora Settings now and record them in a safe place.
To see the settings open Eudora and choose Settings… from the Special menu.
Note that your username and password are likely to be case sensitive. That means that you need to take care with capital and lower case letters.
You won’t see your password in the Settings. If you don’t know it then you’ll need to find a way to retrieve it. You may find Eudora Tips 142 and 143 from July 2002 useful for information on how to use Logging to retrieve a password.
Keep in mind too that your email password is almost certainly different for every email address you have and that it’s unlikely to be the same as the password for logging in to your computer.
Another benefit of ensuring that you know your username and password is that many email addresses can be checked via a web interface – very handy when travelling or otherwise away from your computer. In order to access your mail you’ll need to know the web address as well as your username and password.

Eudora does indeed make a backup copy. I think my client and I tried that without success. Even if it had been successful though my point is that there are some settings you should have a written record of.

True. Eudora has long done this. I think we found her bkup file was also corrupt. The main point I wanted to make though was that there are certain settings you should actually know or at least have recorded somewhere.
