Eudora Tip #224/19-May-2004

Some Eudora 6 users have found text disappearing from messages they’ve received. Chunks go missing, to be replaced by the word “…snip…”. You can see an example in the screenshot. Be sure to click on the thumbnail for a larger version where you can actually see what’s happening.

Snipped text in Eudora 6. If you look at the picture you’ll see the red text in the top screenshot covers about 7 lines, while in the bottom screenshot it covers only 5 lines, with “…snip…” on the third line.

Note also that this text is all being displayed in the Preview pane and that at the top of the screenshots you can see the words “None” and “Terse”. See Eudora Tips 176 and 177 for more information on the Preview Pane.

This is a clue to what’s happening and how Eudora is aiming to help you by not displaying possibly unnecessary text.

First select a long message with lots of quoted text. Double click it to open it in its own window. The message should display every single word.

Now open that same message in the Preview pane. You may see that some text has been “snipped”. Use the pop-up at the top of the Preview Pane (Eudora 6.1) to switch between None, Compact and Terse and watch what happens.

According to your choices and the amount of text in the message Eudora may replace some text with a “…snip…”. That lets you know that there is more quoted material which has not been displayed.

To control how Eudora behaves visit the Settings and look for the Content Concentrator item.

Eudora’s online Support pages have more information too.
