Eudora Tip #209/10-Dec-2003
Open in Browser with a Script

Some Eudora users have had problems with getting Eudora to open certain HTML messages in a browser. Christopher C. Stone’s response to this problem was to write an Applescript. The script allows you to open the message in the background if you wish. This means that instead of the browser coming to the front to disrupt your reading in Eudora it stays out of the way until you’re ready to look at it.

First visit: members.cox.net/stoneworks/eudora/scripts to download the scripts and the item called satimage_oxax.zip. You can choose between scripts for Internet Explorer and for Safari. If you download both, as I did, you might need to rename them when you install.

You’ll need to uncompress the scripts with Stuffit Expander or similar which is usually provided on all new Macs. then start with Satimage and read the ReadMe for information on installing it.

Now go to the Applescript folder in your Applications folder and double-click Install Script Menu. This adds an icon to the right-hand end of your menu bar.

Next open either your User’s Library folder or the main Library folder and locate the Scripts folder. Create a folder for Eudora and move Christopher’s scripts into it.

Start up Eudora and locate a message which uses HTML. Select it and go to the Scripts menu then choose Open in Browser from the Eudora submenu. If all is well then you should see your message in the web browser window.

Note: these instructions have been written for Panther. You might find with Jaguar or OS 9 that there are some differences. There are also other ways to work with the scripts. Please use the comments form on the archive web page to ask questions or suggest other possible ways to handle the Scripts menu.

My thanks to Christopher C. Stone for drawing my attention to his scripts and for making scripts for Safari, my browser of choice.
