Startup or Login Items
Mac Tip #112/30-July-2003
There are some things you always use on your Mac. Each time you start up the machine you then have to find your Applications or Documents folder and double click the item you want to use. Email, web browser, maybe word processing, iPhoto or an accounts file. Wouldn’t it be great if they could just be there, ready and waiting to get to work!
Well, the good news is, they can be. On OS 9 and earlier these are referred to as Startup Items, while under OS X they’re called Login Items.
Mac OS 9 Startup Items
Niners: Find the item you want to be opened at start-up. Also open up the Startup Items folder within the System Folder.
Now hold down both the Command (Apple) and Option keys and drag the item into the Startup Items folder. When you hold down that key combination an alias of the item will be created rather than the item itself being moved.
Next time you start or restart the computer those items will automatically open up.
Mac OS X Login Items
Tenners: It’s easier for you. Open the System Preferences (under the Apple menu or on your Dock) and click on Login Items.
Click the Add… button and navigate around until you reach the item you want. Select that item and click Add.
Quit the System Preferences.
Now each time you log in to your computer those items will automatically open up.
