File extensions serve some important purposes. Make sure you keep the extension attached to the filename.

Those pesky file extensions
Mac Tip #93/19-March-2003

If you have a recent version of AppleWorks you’ll have noticed it seems to always want to add the letters .cwk at the end of the name of any file you create. Maybe you carefully delete them each time.

Well, it might be time to not only let them stay there but also to go ahead and add similar file extensions to files you make in other applications.

Some other common file extensions are (notice how they all start with a . — pronounced “dot”:

  • .doc for Microsoft Word documents
  • .xls for Microsoft Excel documents
  • .ppt or .pps for Microsoft Powerpoint documents
  • .txt for plain text files
  • .jpg or .gif or .tiff (or various others) for pictures
  • .html for web pages
  • .pdf for PDF files (Portable Document Format)
