Web Browser Tip 2
Mac Tip #89/19-Feb-2003
Web browser software is what lets you look at web pages. Internet Explorer 5 (IE 5) came installed on your Mac (unless it’s a very old Mac) and has been doing well for several years.
[Update 2009: Internet Explorer was discontinued for the Mac several years ago.]
The Web grows and changes every single minute and your web browser needs to keep up. Internet Explorer just isn’t keeping pace any more and has become rather tired.
Other web browsers have made great strides ahead, introducing new and useful features while IE hasn’t had a serious update for “ever”.
If you’re a “Niner” or a “Tenner” try out Opera and enjoy the tabbed browsing, the ability to store and retrieve passwords from the Keychain, the ability to easily switch images on or off, the ability to search Google right from the Address Bar or the Toolbar.
If you’re a “Tenner” (with Jaguar, OS X 10.2.2 or better*) then download Safari.
Safari brings speed, good looks, Google search from the Toolbar, SnapBack, better Bookmarks, easier downloads, pop-up blocking and even the ability to check the spelling of text you type into forms. After a year or so of being an Opera devotee I switched to Safari in the blink of an eye.
[*If you're using OS X, but a version before 10.2 then run to your Mac store and pay for the update — it's absolutely worth it!]
