Eudora Tip #148/04-Sept-2002
One of my clients recently complained that Eudora kept marking out perfectly good words as being incorrectly spelled. Words like colour or favourite.
The problem is that Eudora comes with a US Spelling Dictionary and for those of us who don’t use US spelling that means we’re constantly having to deal with these so-called spelling errors.
What we need to do is to go to:
and download one or more of the “international” dictionaries. These are very small and cover several languages:
- British (.sit ~129k)
- German (.sit ~294k)
- Spanish (.sit ~196k)
- French (.sit ~81k)
- Italian (.sit ~221k)
- Portuguese (.sit ~69k)
- Dutch (.sit ~219k)
- Finnish (.sit ~478k)
- Swedish (.sit ~81k)
The .sit means it’s a compressed file, the ~ means approximately, and the 129K or whatever means the file is 129 Kilobytes in size. Each file should take only a few moments to download with a 56K modem.
Once you’ve downloaded the file you need to use Stuffit Expander to uncompress it. Make sure you have a recent version.
Now find your Eudora application and move these two files into the Spelling Dictionaries folder within the Eudora Stuff folder in the Eudora Pro folder (where the application resides). Remove the American spelling dictionaries if you don’t use American spelling.
If you use Mac OS X you’ll likely be stumped at this point as you won’t find the Eudora Stuff Folder. Never fear – just hold down the Control key while clicking on the Eudora application and choose Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. Then open the Contents Folder and the Mac OS folder and you’ll be able to follow the instructions above.
You might need to restart Eudora, but now you should find words in your language won’t be highlighted for incorrect spelling.
