The Magical Expanding Email Address
Eudora Tip #117/23-Jan-2002
What happens when you start to type an address into the To: (or Cc or Bcc) field? If that address is already in your address book as a nickname does Eudora jump in and suggest the nickname for you? When you’ve typed the entire nickname does Eudora expand it out to the full address when you move on to the next field?
If not – if you have to go ahead and type out the whole nickname, or if you type the nickname and then don’t see the full address after tabbing to the next field then you can make things easier for yourself.
Go to the Special Menu – Settings – Composing Mail. In that Tab you’ll see a couple of useful checkboxes: Auto-complete Nicknames and Expand Nicknames Immediately. Check those boxes to speed up your entry of addresses.
Here’s what they do:
Suppose I have Rachel in my Address Book.
If I have Auto-complete Nicknames checked then as soon as I type R Eudora will start to suggest names from my address book. See Tip #63 for more information on using this.
If Eudora suggests Rachel then I can simply press Tab to move to the Subject field without needing to type the rest of the name. Alternatively I could press Return to accept the name and remain in the To: field.
If I have Expand Nicknames Immediately checked then once I move out of the To: field the nickname will be replaced by the full email address attached to that name. If I don’t have that option checked then I will only see the nickname. Eudora will still use the full address at the time of sending though.
Personally, I prefer to see the full address. I actually know more than one person called Rachel and it could be embarrassing to send an email to the wrong one
