Applescript on the Toolbar
Eudora Tip #79/02-May-2001

In the last two Tips we’ve created an Applescript and saved it on the desktop. Using the script from there though is rather clunky. Eudora can use that script in several ways, but one way is to add the script to your Toolbar.

Create a new button on your Toolbar (See Tips 53 & 56) then with Eudora at the front drag the script icon onto it. Now to run the script just click on the Toolbar button.

Here in Wellington, New Zealand we can recycle cans, plastic, glass and paper by putting them in green plastic bins which we leave by the side of the road for collection each week. Luckily with email messages we don’t need to deal with recycling them—once that Trash mailbox empties the messages are simply gone.

But if we keep some, after a while they start to mount up. At the time of writing I have:

Folders: 4

Mailboxes: 104

Messages: 20,250

Mail Folder Size: 67mb

And no, I didn’t count them all by hand. Barry Wainwright’s magnificent Count the Mail Applescript. Find out how much mail you have stored.

Add it to your toolbar (or follow Barry’s suggestions for even greater ease of use) and sit back while your computer does the work for you.

Barry adds a note: “I believe the script won’t work with some version of Eudora IF the user has an IMAP mail account defined. I haven’t been able to exhaustively test and confirm this yet, it only came to light very recently. I suspect that Eudora can’t identify (mail folder “”) if there’s an IMAP mailbox present.

I would be interested in any confirmatory reports from your readers if they do try it. Ask them to let me know what OS & Eudora version they are running.” Barry’s email address is on his web page.
